Many individuals are born with prominent ears that appear disproportionate in their size and dimension in comparison to their other facial features. Commonly, our patients state that their ears simply stick out too far from their head and wish to have this corrected. The reasons for their personal choice are often multifactorial, but often relate to their ears being a source of low self-esteem and a target of bullying in their life. Otoplasty, or ear pinning surgery, is an extremely popular cosmetic procedure commonly performed on children and adults to achieve a normal appearance of the ears. Seattle’s facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. James M. Ridgway, performs ear pinning surgery for both children and adults looking to improve the appearance of large or protruding ears while helping to renew a strong self-image through natural and aesthetic results.
Otoplasty is very common surgical procedure for both children, at least five years of age, and adults. If your child is bothered by the look of his or her ears, you may choose to discuss their options regarding ear pinning procedures, but the decision to undergo surgery must be mutual.
Dr. Ridgway can correct various aesthetic irregularities with ear pinning surgery, such as:
Many of Dr. Ridgway’s Seattle ear pinning patients, both young and old, have experienced a boost in their self-esteem upon achieving a more harmonious and proportional facial appearance. Dr. Ridgway will never hesitate to take the extra time to help you or your child feel completely comfortable heading into surgery.
The otoplasty procedure is designed to create a fold in the back of the ear that helps them to rest more closely to the sides of the head. The procedure may also require repositioning of the “cup” of the ear closer to the head as well. Regardless of the techniques used, the final result will be a natural repositioning of the ears to a more ideal orientation. Dr. Ridgway will make sure that you or your child is comfortably sedated throughout the surgery by using a general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. An incision will be made behind the ear through which Dr. Ridgway will reshape the cartilage as needed. Permanent sutures are then put into place to hold the new shape and help them to remain in their new position. Dr. Ridgway will then close all incisions, which will be hidden from sight behind the ears.
The results of the otoplasty procedure will be noticeable immediately. Dressings will be needed initially, but the recovery process of ear pinning surgery is relatively quick. Any protrusion of the ears that once existed will be dramatically improved for a beautiful and natural balance of the face and ears.
